Every 68 seconds, a person is sexually assaulted in the US. Sixty-three percent of assaults are not reported to law enforcement, and only an estimated 44-55% of those victims that do report also receive a medical-forensic exam. The RUSANE program was started to increase access to medical-forensic exams by educating nurses to become Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners, specifically in underserved and rural communities. This presentation will focus on: a) the benefits of patients receiving a medical-forensic exam by a trained nurse that uses a trauma-informed approach, b) the efforts made by the RUSANE program since 2018, and c) the recently developed exam center at FIU that aims to serve as a replicable model for other universities and rural communities.
