The use of canines as biological detectors has seen an unprecedented amount of research and development in the last few years. Canine detection is rapidly evolving into a new era – the evolution of a traditional operational discipline into a working discipline of scientific validation and standardization. With this new era comes a horizon of new perspectives and even more questions to explore to shape and strengthen canine science. This presentation will outline the history and future of canine detection standardization efforts and inform of the current roadmap being used to implement these nationwide. The value of standardization should be understood in the context of the forensic use of canine detection. While the road to standardized practices is a lengthy process, the aim of this presentation is to show the value of standardization in the context of promoting repeatability and reproducibility while research continues. The success and efforts of this new research and development period for canine detection is dependent on utilizing the input from the community to help inform and shape the road to standardization to be ultimately implemented across the wide range of detection threats and needs. Furthermore, the objective of this presentation is to present key areas of research need and development by depicting a variety of factors that influence the measured performance of canine teams around the globe. By presenting areas of research need, canine detection across all disciplines can work in unison to bridge knowledge gaps and achieve productive collaboration efforts that bring the canine nose and the laboratory bench together to withstand the highest scrutiny in courts of law and operational scenarios.
