Rewarding Explosives Detection Dogs (EDD) is essential in their work to maintain the required detection performance but can be challenging in an operational environment. The use of bulk amounts of explosives is impossible or difficult due to safety and security reasons. TNO has developed and trialled a solution using nano-plotted explosives. The dogs are exposed to actual explosive material, while safety and security requirements are met. The explosive sample production principle and operational trials are described, and recommendations and goals for further development are presented.
